The 2011 Sangiovese Amaranto bursts from the glass with sweet red cherries, raspberries and flowers. As always, the Amaranto is made in a juicy, fruity style best suited for drinking over the next few years. It remains one of the prettiest and most fairly priced wines in its price range. This is simply a joyous glass of wine and a great value to boot.

The 2010 Sangiovese Carandelle adds considerable structure to the overt fruit of the Amaranto. Firm yet well-integrated tannins support an expressive core of dark raspberries, flowers and licorice. There is an extreme purity to the fruit that is the hallmark of San Cristoforo. The 2010 finishes with just a hint of compactness that probably comes from the structure of 10% Petit Verdot added to the blend.

The 2009 Sangiovese Carandelle is a gorgeous, layered wine graced with sweet red cherries, minerals, flowers and spices, all of which come together beautuflly in this highly attractive feminine red. The Carandelle offers exceptional balance through to the refined finish. The Carandelle spent ten months in barrel.

The 2009 Maremma Toscana Podere San Cristoforo is 100% Petit Verdot that spent 10 months in French oak. It is a racy, sleek wine that impresses for its elegant texture and richness rather than for its varietal character, of which there is relatively little. Dark red fruit, spices, minerals and cassis wrap around the super-ripe, expressive finish. Taken on its own terms, this is a very pretty wine.

The 2008 Carandelle is a more important Sangiovese that spends 12 months in French oak. Dark cherries, flowers, spices and minerals are woven together in an intricate fabric of notable class. Here, too, there is a clarity and definition to the fruit that is remarkable. Readers will have a hard time finding a more pleasurable bottle of wine for the money. This is another fabulous wine from Podere San Cristoforo.

The 2007 Sangiovese Carandelle is a super-ripe, sexy wine laced with perfumed red fruits, sweet spices, tobacco and flowers, all of which are woven together in a luxuriously elegant fabric. Medium in body, it possesses outstanding persistence and balance in an utterly irresistible style, with the extra dimension of volume that is typical of the wines of Maremma. Sweet, candied notes linger on the finish. Ideally the wine should be opened 15-30 minutes prior to serving.

The 2007 San Cristoforo (Syrah, Petit Verdot) flows from the glass with superb clarity and precision. Black cherries, earthiness, grilled herbs, licorice and leather all make an appearance as this full-bodied, beautifully-crafted red flows from the glass. The balance and depth here are simply impeccable. This is first-class juice.

There is something unique and ashy about this. Violets, sour cherries, blue plums and blueberries with a touch of minerals. Quite bright and energetic on the palate, with a medium to full body and lots of vibrancy from its juicy blue fruit and mid-palate tension. Tannins are fresh and fine. Such liveliness. Baked black cherries, Damson plums, mussel shells and violets. So youthful, with a touch of tapenade that extends to the fresh and full-bodied palate. This is generous, long and compact, with filigreed tannins. A blast of sweet juicy blue fruit in its lengthy finish. From organically grown grapes. A really lovely wine that involves the addition of some dried grapes at the end of fermentation, which makes it more generous.

This sangiovese shares amaranta’s blue fruit brightness, with an attractively ashy and floral undertone. Juicy and vibrant, with a medium body and a sappy finish. Lots of blue fruit succulence, with round, fresh tannins. Delicious primary fruit.

A crunchy and minerally white with notes of lemon pith, spiced green apples and savory herbs. Medium-bodied with vivid acidity and some saltine character at the end. Fresh and flinty. From organically grown grapes.

Wild strawberries, raspberries, blood oranges and cherry blossoms. Fresh and crunchy on the palate, with sharp, steady acidity. Medium-bodied, focused and refreshing. From organically grown grapes.

This is an outstanding example that shows how Tuscan petit verdot can be pure, fresh, textural and effortlessly drinkable. Succulent and al dente, with firm, ashy tannins and lots of fresh blue fruit. Excellent mid-palate texture. Juicy and lightly peppery in the finish. From organically grown grapes.

The Podere San Cristoforo 2019 Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Carandelle is a terrific value (with 9,100 bottles produced) from a vineyard site with lots of stones and iron and magnesium-rich clay. This Sangiovese shows freshness and focus with a streamlined approach and lingering tones of raspberry, wild cherry, earth and blue flower. Thanks to its depth and elegance, this wine acts more like a Sangiovese from deeper inland in Tuscany.

I enjoyed a fascinating tasting of a wine that had been aged in bottle next to the same wine aged underwater in amphorae. The Podere San Cristoforo 2019 Petit Verdot Amphora was sunk 30 meters under the waterline in Tuscany's Gulf of Talamone with about four atmospheres of pressure and magnetic fields. The organic wine rests inside a 750-milliliter clay amphora bottled with very low sulfur. Only 600 of these little containers were produced and vintner Lorenzo Zonin found a potter who was commissioned to handcraft each one. It stayed underwater for nine months with no water penetration in anaerobic conditions at a very stable 10 degrees Celsius. This expression felt a little more shy initially, but it opened beautifully to linear dark fruit notes, mineral, pencil shaving and even a hint of crushed oyster shell. Of this two wines, this wine feels better poised for a longer evolution over time.

The organic 2022 Maremma Toscana Vermentino Luminoso has a beautiful bouquet that shows a lot of sharpness and generous fruit with soft citrus, orchard fruit, quince, honey and spicy saffron. The wine boasts focus, crispness and energy with a glossy, mid-weight mouthfeel. This is a field blend of 85% Vermentino and 15% Trebbiano that sees no oak. Production is 14,460 bottles.

The organic Podere San Cristoforo 2020 Petit Verdot shows big intensity with inky black fruit and a garden-like quality, like walking into a hot house with a botanical mix of soil and plants. The fruit is definitely ripe and bold, but this wine manages good integration thanks to the abundant fruit fiber and richness that backs it up. It calls for a hearty winter dish of stewed meat.

This is a beautiful organic wine with dark layers of fruit, crushed stone and light spice. The Podere San Cristoforo 2019 Petit Verdot comes together with terrific precision and focus. You feel the quality of the fruit and the gentle tension it leaves on the palate. There is freshness and a light dusty quality to the tannins. I tasted this wine next to the exact same wine that had instead been aged underwater in a clay pot.

Blackberry with graphite and black-cherry aromas follow through to a full body with creamy, fine tannins. Slightly short on finish, but satisfying in the end. From organically grown grapes.

Another expression of organic Sangiovese from Lorenzo Zonin's dynamic Podere San Cristoforo, the 2018 Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Amaranto shows a robust and moderately concentrated constitution. This expression reveals dark fruit and plum with higher toned notes of wild cherry and rose at the back. The tannins are a little rougher in the case of this wine.

The Podere San Cristoforo 2018 Governo all'Uso Toscano Ameri opens to dark concentration and bold intensity, especially if you consider that this is a pure expression of organic Sangiovese. The Governo all'Uso Toscano is a traditional method in which the grape stems are cut on the vine, resulting in partially air-dried clusters. This increases the distinctive concentration of the wine. You get lots of bold cherry fruit and some dried fruit aromas of plum and prune. However, the mouthfeel is streamlined and fresh, keeping in line with the variety.

The organic 2018 Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Carandelle opens to elegant traces of wild rose, cherry and blue flower. The careful and soft appeal of this Sangiovese might make you think that the wine originates from a cooler climate and not from sun-kissed southern Tuscany. Fine and silky tannins give the wine a graceful finish.

The 2018 Petit Verdot (made with organic fruit) opens to a concentrated and dark appearance with blackberry, plum and tart cherry. The bouquet also leaves room for some herbal sensations with tar, licorice and campfire ash. Those aromas are nicely underlined in this vintage that started cool in the spring and ended on a much warmer note before harvest. This pretty wine should yield even smoother results with a few more years of bottle age.

The 2011 Petit Verdot is an immensely pleasurable wine that is very much defined by its dark fruit tones and thick extraction. True to the variety, the wine is redolent of dark cherry, tar, spice and cola. There's a distant touch of dried herb or oregano at the very back. The mouthfeel is deep and penetrating and although the persistency is not very long, the wine hits all the right marks. It should continue to evolve over the next five years.

The 2018 Governo all'Uso Toscano Ameri is made with an ancient technique in which a portion of the grapes are allowed to partially dry on the vine, then harvested and added to the fermenting must as a way of introducing more yeast cells. In a world in which achieving full maturity on the vine and completing fermentations are not an issue, the Governo style is being used as a choice rather than as necessity, and it is a bit of a trend as there are more and more wineries experimenting with this technique. The 2018 is a dark wine loaded with jammy fruit, spice, licorice and lavender, all in a concentrated style that also amplifies the tannins. It is an eccentric wine, but also intriguing for what it is.

The 2018 Petit Verdot from Podere San Cristoforo is an intriguing wine. Black cherry, lavender, juniper berry, licorice and herbs lend striking aromatic complexity. As always, the Petit Verdot is not especially varietal, but it nevertheless has a lot to offer, most notably plenty of succulent, fleshy fruit and plenty of its own character.

The 2017 Sangiovese Amaranto is a bit wild and rough around the edges. Bright acids balance some of those unruly contours in a wine that has a lot of character. The 2017 Governo all'Uso Toscano Ameri is inky, dark and exotic. Big, burly tannins enshroud a core of dark, rich fruit, spice and licorice. The Ameri is made with the ancient ‘Governo’ technique in which a portion of the grapes are allowed to partially dry on the vine, then harvested and added to the fermenting must as a way of introducing more yeast cells. Governo was used at a time when achieving ripeness in the field was a challenge. That is rarely the case today. It’s hard to really understand where Governo wines fit in the present day.

The Petit Verdot from Podere San Cristoforo is always an intriguing wine, as it is again in 2017. Exotic and singular in character, the Petit Verdot offers up a mélange of red fruit, rose petals and dried herbs. The 2018 is bold and fleshy, with notable substance and tons of personality. It is not especially varietal – but this wine never has been – and yet there is something incredibly appealing about the Petit Verdot. The inky, layered finish is super-expressive.

Al sorso manifesta una struttura ben proporzionata, una misurata forza alcolica e una scia fresca, dai ritorni di erbe aromatiche e frutta rossa. Riposa per 10 mesi in rovere francese. Lasagne alla bolognese.

Rubino. Una stilla di sangue e carne per un naso didatticamente ematico, con profumi di ribes, lamponi e melagrana a corredo. Fresco e diretto, dai tannini vivaci, offre un sorso agile e coerente. 10 mesi di elevazione in barrique.

Nettissimo all'olfatto l'Amaranto 2015, qui il richiamo è pura amarena, e la trasformazione enologica non ha distorto o diminuito affatto la sua cristallina definizione d'aroma.

This wine is a result of the Governo all'Uso Toscano method in which stems are cut on the vine, resulting in partially air-dried fruit. The partially dried grapes are added to the must during fermentation to obtain extra softness and more intensity. The 2015 Ameri (100% Sangiovese) reveals a deep and dark color. There is some Amarone-like intensity here, but it comes through with finesse and elegance. You do feel it in the mouth, where the wine shows sweet flavors of dark cherry liqueur. This is a very interesting wine that finishes with softness, power and succulence.

The 2016 Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Carandelle is a lean and streamlined wine that glides smoothly and easily over the palate. At this young stage in the wine's life, the bouquet is vinous, edgy and fruit forward. Those rough edges should soften with a few more months in the bottle. The nose imparts fresh layers of cherry and dried blackberry. You also get spice and structure from ten months of oak aging.

Rosso porpora luminoso. Straordinario impatto olfattivo con nitidi frutti rossi, dove Ia ciliegia, Ia fragolina selvatica e it ribes primeggiano. Rosa canina, lavanda e iris completano it quadro floreale, a cui si aggiungono it timo e Ia maggiorana. In bocca 6 Ia freschezza a dominare I'impatto gustativo insieme a un tannino ovviamente in piena gioventu. Finale gustoso e lungo con una leggera chiusura amaricante. Matura per 10 mesi in barrique di rovere francese. Arista di maiale.

Un vino di eccellente fittezza, di morbidezza apprezzata, di candore enologico esecutivo tal che il diamante d'aroma di mora che brilla sovrano è identico, integro, tal quale quello dell'uva nativa. Chapeau. Grandissima suadenza d'aroma, con la morbidezza che si manifesta al palato, dopo che il profumo, il suo succoso cassis balsamico, limpido aveva annunciato. Dopo che il colore con la sua violaceità fitta, la sua gran, consistenza aveva intensamente annunciato. Un dispiego tattilmente viscoso, densamente glicerinoso, una maturità di frutto estrema eppur non compromettente il vivido turgore residuo. Ecco la dote principe di questo campione: l'illibata purezza del suo frutto, tanto in pulizia d'aroma quanto in originario, intatto, ossidativo vigore. The Carandelle 2015 is a really good Sangiovese with a subtle, ethereal nose with lovely floral hints and intriguing nuances of pink pepper. The palate is lively and dynamic with elegant acidity and smooth tannins.

Tonic and tight, the 2015 Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Carandelle exudes elegance and grace. This is a delicate expression with aromas of wild berry, blue flower and blanched almond. When it comes to highlighting the finesse and finer detailing of Sangiovese, Podere San Cristoforo is among the best on the Tuscan Coast. This mid-weight wine finishes with silky, polished tannins.

Giallo paglierino tenue. Delicati profumi di mela verde, erba tagliata, leggere note iodate, mentuccia e fior di oleandro. Interessante equilibrio gustativo con una spiccata sapidita in risalto. Chiude con sufficiente persistenza, caratterizzata da ritorni floreali e di frutta. Vinifica in acciaio, dove permane sui propri lieviti per 7 mesi prima dell'imbottigliamento. Sgombro alla griglia.

Paglierino. Mela verde, limone, acacia e mandorle su una vena minerale gessosa, per un sorso fresco e immediato, agile, appena sapido nel finale. 7 mesi in inox.

Il Luminoso 2015 è bianco tale di nome e di purezza olfattiva. lnossidato e privo di macchia alcuna, la luce che maturò la sua uva qui è tutta intensità e purezza d'espressione. La suadenza del suo gusto, eccellente bilanciamento fra morbidezza e acidità del frutto.

The clean, clear-cut Amaranto 2015 is fresh tasting with slightly piquant tannins, and fluent, coherent body.

This is a ripe and penetrating wine that also offers unexpected elegance, especially for a grape of this power and determination. The 2016 Petit Verdot is sweet, round and bursting with bright fruit intensity. It ages in Allier barrique for ten months, so you also get a good amount of spice and oak-driven complexity. Ultimately, what sets this wine apart is the elegance and attractive accessibility it offers to consumers. Only 6,500 bottles were made.

The tannins remain a bit firm, so readers may want to give this broad-shouldered wine another year or two in bottle.

The 2010 Sangiovese Carandelle adds considerable structure to the overt fruit of the Amaranto. Firm yet well-integrated tannins support an expressive core of dark raspberries, flowers and licorice. There is an extreme purity to the fruit that is the hallmark of San Cristoforo. The 2010 finishes with just a hint of compactness that probably comes from the structure of 10% Petit Verdot added to the blend.

A red with firmness and beauty, showing dried fruit, blackcurrant and hints of violet and cedar. Full-bodied, chewy and structured. A little hard now: Needs until 2017 to open but already very pretty.

An impressive petit verdot with dark berries and hints of black pepper and dried flowers. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2015 when the tannins soften.

A wine with blueberry and minerals with hints of dried flowers. Full body, with fine tannins and a beautiful structure. Extremely elegant yet structured. Gorgeous Petit Verdot. This may be THE grape variety for the Maremma in the future. Already approachable but much better to leave it in the cellar for at least four or five years. (Nov 26th, 2012)

The 2009 Maremma Toscana Podere San Cristoforo is 100% Petit Verdot that spent 10 months in French oak. It is a racy, sleek wine that impresses for its elegant texture and richness rather than for its varietal character, of which there is relatively little. Dark red fruit, spices, minerals and cassis wrap around the super-ripe, expressive finish. Taken on its own terms, this is a very pretty wine.

The 2007 San Cristoforo (Syrah, Petit Verdot) flows from the glass with superb clarity and precision. Black cherries, earthiness, grilled herbs, licorice and leather all make an appearance as this full-bodied, beautifully-crafted red flows from the glass. The balance and depth here are simply impeccable. This is first-class juice.
